The Ministry of Environment and Ecological Transition launched a national roadmap on Monday, October 26, 2026, in Dakar to reduce the carbon footprint of the cement and concrete industry. The ambition is to modernize a sector that is essential for construction and infrastructure, yet particularly energy-intensive. The mechanism is designed to identify technologies, process evolutions, and regulatory measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It thus places the transformation of industrial tools at the heart of climate policy, without separating the country's development needs from environmental requirements. An emissions trajectory to bend According to figures presented during the launch, the cement industry emitted 5.9 million tonnes of CO₂ in 2024. Without corrective measures, its emissions could reach 13 million tonnes per year by 2050. Urbanization, housing construction, and major infrastructure are fueling a growing demand for materials.
